Monastiraki Square Snap Shots Page 1

Monastiraki Square was made over for the Olympics in 2004. In fact they finished it in 2003 along with the Syntagma Sq. to Monastiraki Sq. metro extension link but have to re-do it or at least re-landscape it because they forgot to put in any trees in their hurry to use up all the money granted for the project. Planners did the same thing in Omonia Square and are re-landscaping that too hopefully.

From Monastiraki Square one cant miss the Acropolis shining in the sunlight above. As one enters the square they will notice the small Byzantine church called small Monastiraki or small monastery (below center). Observant visitors will see a myriad of signs pointing in all directions and may be confused by all the people scurrying about hither and yon. There are three kinds of people here, those buying, those selling and those watching. A great place to have a bite to eat (souvlaki) and a beer is Thanasi's on Mitropoleos Street. There are many imitators but Thanasi's Pita Souvlaki is the best! It's worth asking for and about 10 meters past the corner of the square and Mitropoleos street on the right hand side as you face Constitution square direction.
