Greece travel with Oracle Tours: Naufplion Peloponnese

naufplion aerial viewThe port of Naufplion was briefly declared the first Capital of Greece back in 1826 and currently has around 20,000 inhabitants.

This small city is divided into the older and far nicer part and the newer tasteless part which has grownup on its boundaries.

The old towns archetectural heyday was during the tenure off the then newly appointed President of Greece, Ioannis Capodistrias. Some older buildings however, still exist from the period of Venetian occupation.

President Capodistrias was assasinated in Nuafplion by two two brothers over his decision in a gambling case he had ruled and presided over. A plaque commemorates the spot.

The new town is an ordinary Greek town with no special assets, so instead stroll about the old, historic quarter with its neoclassical buildings, charming squares and fountains. Old Naufplion is capital of the prefecture and really is one of the loveliest towns in all of Greece and certainly the lovliest of the Peloponnese excluding perhaps Monemvasia. With its neoclassic houses, picturesque streets, wooden balconies, cascading flowers, Turkish fountains, Constitution (Syntagma) square with fascinating mosques and outdoor cafe tables and tavernas(restaurants) is only 2 hours from Athens!.

town fomr the castle viewHere after centuries of struggle peace has finally settled. You'll walk its byways and immerse yourself in its history, burrowing into its past; the house of the Regent Mauer, the Military Academy, it operates as a military Museum, the army Ministry, first high school, Parliament house, st. Spyridon's church where Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece was assassinated.

This fairy tale world continues, whether you climb up the 999 steps (or dirve around back :) to the Venetian fortress of Palamidi crowning the city, wander around the battlements of Acronafplia or pop over to the fortified island, Bourtzi, afloat in the middle of the bay. (The old town left)

Naufplion is full of the joy of life, it is the nobility and calm found in Minoan frescoes, in Syntagma square the Archaeological Museum with its finds from various periods and frescoes from Mycenae and Assini, is housed in an imposing Venetian building. While the Folk Art Museum on Vas. Alexandrou Street occupies a neoclassical house.
