Sparta

Descended from the Dorian invaders who had settled on the fertile plain of the Evrotas River, the Spartans ran a very different kind of city state, which also depended on slaves, called Helots, these the original inhabitants of Lakonia, the slaves supporting the activities of the military elite. Boys were taken from their mothers at the age of seven and subjected to harsh military training, while babies considered weak or in some way defective were put out on a mountain to die of exposure. Girls, though not trained as soldiers, were subject to athletic training, designed to make them fit to bear strong warriors.
