The Peloponnese

peloponnese map

Mt. Killini

scenes along train routeThis mountain is not as high as nearby Helmos, nor as interesting, with far less forest, though there's some up high on the northern and eastern slopes. Some of its more interesting wildlife habitat is about 1500-1600 meters, consisting of some hawthorn, juniper, and various kind of thistle, all of which attract butterflies, red-backed shrikes, and rock nuthatches in places.

Higher up there's some interesting species of flora, with some endemics, and at the upper edges of the forest, particularly near cliffs a large blue bellflower, and other plants. Crocuses appear near the snowline in early spring as well as wild tulips. Access onto this mountain is easy, which has contributed to much of the damage done to it in the way of deforestation and over-grazing.
