Mt.Ymittos (Hymettos)

This long low mountain (1000 meters or 3,288 feet) lies along the east boundary of the city of Athens, and is quite visible from many places within it.

It lower slopes are have some woods (left) , but are mainly rocky (limestone). The area near the Monastery at Kaisariani is a lovely spot visited by many Athenians, with walking paths that start from the chapel, and which afford some very pleasant strolls amid greenery and wonderful views out across forested ridges.

There are several kinds of orchids growing in this area, and bulbs in autumn. This area is good for bird-watching, including woodland and scrub birds, and some raptors, storks, and cranes, these last in spring and autumn.
